When it really is a labour of love

The film Inside Out made me cry. Properly sob. I see my children growing up and sometimes it feels like it’s going way too fast. They obviously loved the film too, but for much more wonderfully humorous reasons.

And then my older daughter asked for an Inside Out cake for her birthday. Now they all know they can ask me for pretty much anything. It’s one of the perks of having a cake designer as a Mum. They know how excited I get about my chance to try everything with no budget constraints. My chance to try new techniques, or something I’d just be too worried about on a customer’s cake.

And she had ideas. She wanted the cake to appear like it was inside Riley’s head. Umm…. okay…. I think…. And she wanted all of the characters to be there, with the operating console. And she loved the hoover guys. Actually I also loved the hoover guys, and their explanation for what’s going on inside my ‘I can’t remember the date of the school trip but I still know every word to Don McLean’s American Pie’ brain….

So I started to look at the promotional material. And I noticed that the posters had the silhouette of Riley’s head as the background, and all of the characters depicted in front of it. Bingo! Or should I say Bing Bong?!

So I created a large sheet of black sugarpaste, shaped to represent Riley’s silhouetted head, and skewered it into the bottom tier. It allowed the characters to sit ‘inside’ her head on the top tier, with the console.

The hoover guys were then popped onto the bottom tier, with the memory tubes. And the bottom tier itself was then covered with plenty of memories. I messed up slightly, in that I made an equal number of each type of memory – there should have been many more joyous yellow ones – especially for a birthday cake!

And yes, she loved it. And yes, I loved it too.

So there you have it. I hope you’ve enjoyed this little insight into designing and making a Really Yummy cake. I’d love to know your thoughts, so why don’t you pop me a comment below?
